Give Books and Costumes a Second Life: Celebrate World Book Day Through Sustainable Giving

World Book Day encompasses the values of embracing our children’s favourite stories, sharing the joy of reading and dressing up in fun costumes.

Bookshelves, whether at home or in classrooms, are filled with stories that sometimes even we’ve forgotten about. We also can’t overlook the collection of costumes from World Book Days gone by, as we know, our kids imaginations can run wild, so finding a new costume every year can be challenging. This World Book Day, we are focusing on sustainability, encouraging everyone to take a moment, breathe, and reflect do we really need all these costumes and books?

How to make World Book Day Sustainable:

Uniformd

At Uniformd we provide a platform for schools and parents to sell all things school related. There is always an option as to whether you would prefer to donate or sell your items. By donating through Uniformd you are giving back, not just to parents that may need it, but also to your school and PTAs as any money raised through the platform goes back into the schools. To donate, simply click on the link attached and if your school is partnered with us, you can just drop any items in. If they are not, you can always contact us to find out how to get your school signed up.

Book and Costume Swaps

By organising book or costume swaps either at home with other parents, or at school, we can get our kids new costumes whilst not having to spend a penny.

DIY Costumes

We can turn old costumes or clothes into new ideas. By taking elements of previous costumes or even using old clothes and accessories around the house we can create our own, personalised, versions of our kids’ favourite book characters. Whether that’s a plain striped t-shirt for Where’s Wally or getting creative and building a cardboard masterpiece of Paddington Bear, anything is possible.

Second-Hand Love

Charity shops are a haven for finding hidden gems, there is always something for everyone, whether it be new stories or fun costumes. On the other hand, you can always donate any of your old items to charity shops. In doing so, you pass on the amazing memories and stories that you shared with your kids to others.

Celebrating World Book Day doesn’t have to come at the cost of the planet. By donating books, reusing costumes, minimising waste and making thoughtful choices, we can make this World Book Day more sustainable and meaningful. At Uniformd we stand strongly with the idea of sustainability, if each of us makes small choices in our lives to try and reduce waste, we can create a cleaner, greener, future for our children.
